MRI
MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a non-invasive testing tool using powerful magnets and radio waves to form images. By targeting specific atoms in the body, MRI is able to clearly define soft tissue.
Most MRI tests take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. No preparation or medications are usually needed. MRI can be performed through most clothing however certain types of metal can cause errors in the images.
You may not have an MRI if you have any of the following:
- Cerebral anuerysm clips
- Certain heart valves
- Cochlear implants
- Metal filings in the eye
- Pacemaker
When you schedule your MRI, you will be asked a series of questions regarding your surgical and occupational background. If this history includes metal work please inform your technologist prior to your exam. Preliminary X-rays may need to be taken.
If you think you may be claustrophobic, ask your doctor to prescribe medication prior to the exam. Please bring someone who is able to drive you home after taking the medication because you will not be able to drive yourself.
